MBA Prerequisites
What are the requirements to be able to start an MBA? Depending on the university and country, there are different conditions for enrollment. And you should also have certain personal requirements to successfully complete an MBA. We have an overview.
If you want to start an MBA and then successfully complete it, you should bring:
- At least one to two years of professional experience
- Good English knowledge
- Usually a first degree (but there are exceptions, see below)
- Ambition and determination
- An environment that accepts your additional work / learning burden
Formal requirements
Most of the universities have very similar formal requirements for their MBA programs:
First university degree
For about 98% of the German MBA, a first university degree, i.e. Bachelor, Diplom, Magister or similar. expected . It is not uncommon to demand that this first degree should include 210 ECTS . Graduates of a Bachelor’s degree with 180 ECTS can often have work experience credited to show the 30 missing ECTS. However, there are also MBA courses that can be started without a first degree.
Work experience
There is hardly an MBA that does not require at least one year of professional experience as a prerequisite. In some cases, up to five years of professional experience are required.
Language skills (TOEFL / IELTS)
Many MBAs from German universities also treat a larger part of the course content in English. Therefore, good knowledge of foreign languages is essential. To prove this, a TOEFL or IELTS with a certain number of points must be proven as a prerequisite .
GMAT
In contrast to the TOEFL, the GMAT is not a pure language test, but rather measures the analytical and logical skills. So it is quite possible that a university demands both the TOEFL and the GMAT.
Entrance test
A large number of universities, especially those with a higher-quality MBA, run a kind of assessment center. The MBA applicants have to do an interview with the admissions committee , for example , or solve and present a project with other applicants.
Letters of recommendation
Letters of recommendation rather than “letters of recommendation” are also more in demand for top-class MBA programs . Sometimes very detailed recommendations are required. The Euro-FH asks, for example, “To what extent is the applicant able – in your opinion – to take on management tasks?” The recommendations should best be issued by superiors and professors from the former university.
Motivation letter
Why do you want to study an MBA? And why at the chosen university? These are the two key questions that you must answer in a letter of motivation. In addition to the tabular information about the person (e.g. curriculum vitae), the universities want to get a better picture of the applicant with this MBA requirement.
Personal requirements
Your studies won’t be a walk, you are certainly aware of that. An MBA should only be taken up by those who have the motivation for months to invest time and energy into learning in addition to their usual work routine (in the majority of cases they study part-time).
You should therefore try to assess yourself objectively:
- Am I single-minded enough?
- Do I have a high level of energy or still have strength reserves after a hard working week ?
- Do I have the necessary conflict resolution potential if, for example, the partner is annoyed by the learning stress or the boss demands overtime?
- What about my ability to work in a team ? In the MBA you study in groups, so a certain ability to work in a team is a basic requirement.
In any case, ask if anything is unclear!
Admission to the MBA is usually decided on the basis of an overall view of the application material. There are some basic conditions (depending on the study program, for example the first degree) that must be met in order to be enrolled. But there are also “softer” requirements (you may also be enrolled with one instead of two years of professional experience).
You should therefore call the student advisory service of the respective provider if you are not sure about anything and need to negotiate.
