MBA IN THE NON-PROFIT SECTOR: “OTHERS ONLY COOK WITH WATER”
Ansgar Cordier is the non-profit sector. Here he tells how the MBA helps him in his work.
I knew early on that I wanted to work with the Middle East. After completing my studies, I started in the Middle East Research Center for Economic and Corporate History at the University of Tübingen in Syria. After that I worked for several years at chambers and business associations in Germany. This is how I came to development cooperation, mostly I work in economic development.
STUDY IN THE DISTANCE
I lived and worked in Yemen when I started my MBA. I am also abroad a lot, so only a distance learning course was possible. I was able to follow all activities and tutorials online and did not have to fly to England for exams, but could write them at the University of Frankfurt.
FOCUS ON SUSTAINABLE PROFITABILITY
I wanted to deepen my knowledge of business and management through my MBA. Development work has little to do with commercial business, so the degree should focus on sustainable profitability. In retrospect, I would not have thought that the MBA course basically contains so many topics relevant to me. An example: The stakeholder approach is about efficiently negotiating with people whose interests conflict. At the same time, one must not forget the strategic goals. Here the strategy module was incredibly helpful.
Many of my fellow students also work in the non-profit sector. This has had a positive impact on the content of the tutorials. My fellow students come from different countries. As a result, I got to know other work environments and challenges. These people have a different perspective on my work – this helped me several times with specific problems. I found the different cultural approaches very enriching.
DON’T BE AFRAID OF NUMBERS
The many modules that provide structured problem solutions were useful. One also develops a better ability to criticize economic gurus. The most comprehensive module was Financial Strategy, which takes away the fear of numbers.
The only thing I regret about my MBA is that I didn’t start it earlier. Above all, I could have taken a more relaxed approach to negotiations with stakeholder groups. Above all, I learned that others only “cook with water”.
